The article analyzes the semantics of the Eastern Slavic past tense verb forms, the aorist and the imperfect tense. The research material is one of the most understudied Old Russian texts, the «Prologue» of the 16th century. The author draws a conclusion about the systematic functioning of the verb forms in the text and, consequently, about the high semantic potential of the analyzed verb forms.
